Frequently Asked Questions
Can a car drive right up to Jaisalmer Fort or Patwon Ki Haveli?
No. The lanes inside Sonar Quila and the approach through Gopa Chowk are too narrow for four-wheelers. Your driver will park near the First Fort Gate or the Desert Cultural Centre and you'll walk the last 5–10 minutes. Plan for this especially in the afternoon heat between 1 PM and 4 PM.
How much does a car rental from Jaisalmer to Sam Sand Dunes cost?
A sedan like a Dzire for the 42 km one-way run costs around ₹1,400–1,800 for a return trip with a 2–3 hour wait at the dunes. A Bolero or Scorpio for the same route is ₹2,500–3,000. Insist on a quote that includes the driver's waiting time — many local operators add it separately at the dunes.
Do I need a permit to drive to Tanot Mata and Longewala from Jaisalmer?
The Tanot–Longewala belt is a restricted border area. Indian nationals need a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence) which is checked at the Ramgarh and Kishangarh posts. Foreign nationals typically need additional clearance, and it's worth confirming current rules with your driver a day in advance since requirements shift.
Is it safe to drive from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur at night?
It's doable but not ideal. The 285 km NH-11 stretch via Pokhran and Balesar has long unlit sections and very few open dhabas after 9 PM. If you're catching an early Jodhpur flight, we recommend leaving Jaisalmer by 4 AM with a driver who knows the road rather than attempting a self-drive overnight.
What's the best car for a Jaisalmer desert safari and Khaba Fort?
A Bolero, Scorpio or similar high-clearance SUV. The track from Sam to Khaba Fort and the Kuldhara ruins has soft sand patches where a sedan will bottom out or get stuck. If you're only doing the main Sam Dunes viewpoint on the paved road, a sedan is fine.
Are AC cars reliable in Jaisalmer's summer heat?
This is the single biggest issue with local rentals. In May and June, temperatures cross 45°C and a weak AC makes the Jodhpur or Sam drive miserable. We pre-check cooling performance on every vehicle assigned to summer bookings, and premium SUVs like the Fortuner or Innova Crysta are the safest bet if you're travelling in peak heat.
Can I book a car for a Jaisalmer desert camp wedding?
Yes, and it's one of our most common bookings between November and February. Weddings at the Sam and Khuri camps usually need 3–8 vehicles shuttling guests between city hotels, the venue and Jaisalmer Airport. Book the full convoy at least 3–4 weeks ahead during the wedding season.
How far is Jaisalmer from the Pakistan border and can I drive to the actual border?
The border is roughly 40 km from Tanot and about 120 km from Jaisalmer city. You cannot drive to the actual border fence — the closest accessible point for civilians is the Tanot Mata temple and the Longewala war memorial. Both are within the restricted belt and require ID checks.
What is the cancellation policy for Jaisalmer car rentals?
Most vendors allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Desert-camp and wedding-season bookings in December and January often have stricter terms because vehicles are blocked for full days. Confirm the specific policy in your quote before paying any advance.
Do rental cars in Jaisalmer come with a driver or can I self-drive?
Both options exist, but chauffeur-driven is far more common here because of the desert terrain, the unmarked sand tracks around Kuldhara and Khaba, and the border-belt ID checks. Self-drive is workable for city and Sam Dunes runs, but for Tanot, Longewala or any off-tarmac route, a local driver is strongly recommended.
