Yes. Indian nationals need a Protected Area Permit for Tsomgo and a separate one for Nathu La, processed through Sikkim Tourism at 3rd Mile. Foreign nationals need an ILP plus PAP. For Nathu La and Tsomgo, an SUV is strongly recommended — the climb crosses 12,000 ft with steep, narrow switchbacks. Hatchbacks handle Gangtok town, Rumtek, and Ranipool fine, but on the Nathu La route they struggle with gradient and load.

Roughly 4 to 4.5 hours covering 124 km via NH-10 through Rangpo and Teesta Bazaar. Add 45–60 minutes during monsoon (June–September) when landslide clearing or single-lane traffic near Rambi can cause delays. Book a buffer if you have a flight.
