About Lucknow

Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, India, and serves as the administrative hub for both the district and division. It is home to about 2.8 million people according to the 2011 census, ranking it as the eleventh most populous city and the twelfth-largest urban area in the country. The city’s name, “Lucknow,” originates from the local pronunciation “Lakhnau.” Legends suggest that it was named after Lakshmana, a hero from the Hindu epic Ramayana, who supposedly had an estate in the area called Lakshmanapuri, which evolved into Lakhanpur and eventually Lucknow. Another theory links the city’s name to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, or to a famed architect, Lakhna Ahir, who built a significant fort here.

Lucknow is famous for its vibrant culinary scene, featuring an array of street foods such as chaats, kulfi, and paan, as well as sweets like Nahari—a mutton dish—and Sheermal, a sweet bread. During winter, the city is known for Makkhan-malai, a seasonal delicacy. The city’s dining culture includes century-old eateries alongside modern high-end restaurants, bakeries, and pubs that cater to both local residents and international visitors. This mix of traditional and contemporary establishments makes Lucknow a diverse and exciting gastronomic destination.

Places to visit

Lucknow is home to fascinating historical sites like the Bara Imambara, known for its maze without beams for support, and the British Residency, a key site during the 1857 revolt. Don’t miss the Rumi Darwaza, an impressive gateway built during a famine to provide employment. For leisure, stroll along Marine Drive or explore Ambedkar Memorial Park, honoring leaders like Dr. BR Ambedkar with numerous statues.

Bara Imambara, Lucknow

Bara Imambara, also known as Bhul Bhulaiya, is a famous historical site in Lucknow. It features a large maze with many entrances but only a few exits, which makes it quite intriguing. It was built by Asfi, a former Nawab of Lucknow, and serves as a place of worship during the Muharram festival. What’s really special about it is that it stands without any beams for support, showcasing unique Mughal era architecture.

Dilkusha Kothi

Dilkusha Kothi is an old building from the 1800s, originally a hunting lodge that was turned into a summer palace. It was first used by an English general named Major Gore Ouseley, and later enhanced by Nawab Nasir-Ud-Din-Haider. The building was significantly damaged during the 1857 Indian Independence war, and now only a few towers and walls remain.

British Residency

The British Residency in Lucknow used to be the headquarters for British generals. During the 1857 revolt, it became a refuge for British people. Now, it’s a historical ruin maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. There’s also a cemetery nearby for the British who died during the siege, and a light and sound show is held every evening to tell the story of the revolt.

Marine Drive, Lucknow

Lucknow’s Marine Drive is a lively spot by the River Gomti, similar to Mumbai’s famous Marine Drive. It’s popular among young people and is great for jogging, cycling, or just chilling out. There are benches along the road where you can sit and enjoy the river view.

Rumi Darwaza

The Rumi Darwaza is a towering gate about 60 feet high, situated between the Bara and Chota Imambara in old Lucknow. It was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, inspired by a gateway in Turkey, to help his people during a famine in 1748 by providing them with work.

Ambedkar Memorial Park

Also known as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Prateek Sthal, this park in Vipul Khand, Gomti Nagar, was created under the direction of former Chief Minister Mayawati. It honors Dr. BR Ambedkar and other leaders like Jyotiba Phule and Birsa Munda. The park is filled with statues, but it’s not very leafy.
